A Man, A Caramel Apple, A Dental Crown

Rochester Hills, MI Dentist - Hubbard & Leath Dental

Once upon a time, there was a man with a full set of teeth.

He could bite into anything — corn on the cob, steak, even taffy — without any worries.

Then one day, he took a bite of a caramel apple, which was his favorite treat, and one of his teeth started to hurt.

He looked in the mirror and saw that his tooth was dark and discolored. He knew he should have been going to the dentist, but he thought everything was fine right up until that very moment.

Would they have to pull out his tooth? Would his smile look funny when his tooth was gone? Would he have to give up eating caramel apples?

Fortunately, he lived in Rochester Hills, so he called the dentists at Hubbard & Leath Dental to make an appointment. They listened to what he told them, and they told him that he might be a good candidate for a dental crown.

‘What Is A Dental Crown?’

The man asked this question, hoping the dental crown would allow him to eat whatever he wanted again.

According to Dr. Leath, crowns are a great service that they offer the patients at their office. It gives the dentist a way to save the healthy parts of a tooth instead of taking it out completely.

That sounded good, the man thought, but he wanted to know more. He found out that dental crowns are used for a number of reasons:

➤ They can restore a tooth that is broken, chipped or cracked.

➤ They can restore a tooth that’s worn down from overuse.

➤ They can cover a tooth with a large filling.

➤ They can be placed on a dental implant (for someone who is missing a tooth).

➤ They can be used to change the shape of a tooth that’s oddly shaped.

➤ They can be used to improve the appearance of the tooth is yellow or discolored.

➤They can protect teeth that are weak from tooth decay.

The man needed to get a crown both because his tooth had become discolored as a result of his tooth decay, and since it was weak, also because of the decay.

Now that he knew what he needed, and he was ready. He trusted the team at Hubbard & Leath Dental to fix him up as good as new.

The Procedure Begins

When the man came for his appointment, he was a little nervous. The staff explained that they could offer him nitrous oxide to help him feel calm.

Nitrous oxide is a type of dental sedation that takes effect quickly. The man breathed in and before he could count to 10, he felt like he was drifting off to sleep.

The dentist started by removing the decayed portions of his tooth. The dentist finished by shaping the healthy parts of the tooth into an abutment.

The dentist then placed a temporary crown over the man’s tooth and turned off the nitrous oxide.

The man woke up feeling somewhat refreshed. He hadn’t felt any pain during his procedure. The dentist explained that a lab was making a dental crown just for him. When it was ready, they would bond it to his tooth.

A Happy Ending

The man returned to Hubbard & Leath Dental when he got a call that his dental crown was ready. Now, they just needed to put it in place.

The dentist showed him the crown. It looked just like one of his real teeth, or at least, the top of a real tooth. When they put it in place, it felt like one, too.

Even though he knew it was fake, it seemed all too real. The dentist sent him on his way and reminded the man to come back for a regular cleaning.

The man had learned his lesson. He scheduled his cleaning that day, and he promised himself that he would return every six months for routine care.

On the way home, he passed a community fair, where they were selling his favorite treat, caramel apples. Did he dare?

The dentist told him the dental crown was secure, so he bought that apple and took a big bite. He was happy to learn that everything was all right.

The Moral Of The Story

The man learned that he should have been going to the dentist office in Rochester Hills all along. They could have cleaned his teeth before the tooth decay ever started to hurt his tooth.

Then, he might not have needed the dental crown, but since he did, he was glad he could go to Hubbard and Leath Dental for his care.
