Dental Implants Let People See You
Consider this situation. You are looking for a new car or truck. You have a good idea what vehicle you want, you just want to find the best deal you can.
The first place you go, they have the exact vehicle you are looking for, but the salesperson who greets you has a visible gap where he or she should have a tooth. Does this affect how you perceive this person? (We aren’t judging you or the salesperson. We’re just asking you to consider your initial reaction.)
The next dealership has a similar car for a similar price. The big difference is that the salesperson has all his or her teeth. You normally would not notice this, but it stands out after the time you spent with the previous salesperson.
If you are someone who is missing a tooth or teeth, people may be judging you unfairly on what’s missing instead of what’s there. You deserve to be treated well, and your teeth should not distract people from getting to know who you are or listening to what you have to say.
At Hubbard and Leath, we can help with dental implants. If you live in Troy, Auburn Hills, or anywhere in between ask about our cosmetic and restorative dental services at our Rochester Hills office.
Reasons to consider dental implants
Some of you may be asking what dental implants are. Not everyone has heard of dental implants, and if even you have, you may not know what they are or how they work.
Dental implants are a type of prosthetic for your mouth. You have probably met or know someone with a prosthetic leg or arm, but you may never know if you meet someone with a prosthetic tooth.
If you are missing a tooth or you need a tooth removed, a dental implant serves as a replacement for the root.
The root is the part of your tooth that is anchored into your jawbone. This keeps your teeth securely in place (most of the time). If your tooth comes out or becomes loose, an implant can replace the missing root.
You may be thinking, that’s great. You understand what an implant is, but why should you consider getting a dental implant?
There are several reasons. Here are a few:
1. Appearance — Think back to our example of the salespeople. Which one do you think is more likely to approach a customer with confidence? Which one is more likely to be self-conscious?
Implants can restore the look of your smile. When you get a dental implant, we will attach a crown, a bridge, or implant-secured dentures. Whether you need to replace a tooth, multiple teeth, or a complete arch, we can give you the appearance of a full set of natural teeth.
2. Oral health — This one may not be as obvious at first. When you are missing a tooth or need a tooth removed, it may be because of tooth decay. Leaving an open space where you once had a root could be opening your bone and adjacent teeth to infection as well.
A dental implant can help prevent an infection from getting into the space where your root once was. Implants also can provide structural support to neighboring teeth.
3. Eating with confidence — If you are missing teeth, you likely are aware that eating can pose its own issues. You may not feel comfortable eating certain foods out of concern that something may get stuck or that you may have difficulty chewing some foods.
Dental implants can close the gaps and restore your chewing power to or close to what you had with your natural teeth. This means you can eat with confidence whether you are enjoying a meal at home or dining out with friends.
4. Security — Most of the time implants are made of metal (often titanium). As your mouth heals, the bone in your jaw will secure around the implant just like it does the roots of your natural teeth.
The abutment at the end of your implant offers a solid foundation for your crown, bridge, or dentures, and this means they will stay in place whether you are eating or talking.
