The Health Benefits of Straight Teeth

When teeth are straight and evenly spaced, it does make a smile look nicer. Your smile also looks better when you can correct overbites and underbites.

We understand that most patients want to straighten their teeth for the cosmetic benefits.

We won’t ignore that, but there’s another reason we want to help our patients have perfect smiles. Straight teeth are healthier.

Now, this isn’t some kind of magic trick, but when your teeth are in line, they are easier to clean. You can remove more plaque with your toothbrush when your teeth don’t overlap one another. You can floss better, too, when your teeth aren’t too close together.

At the same time, we find that patients are often more motivated to keep their mouths healthy when they like their smiles. After all, you don’t want to lose your beautiful smile to tooth decay after you’ve put in the work to straighten your teeth.

How Should You Straighten Your Teeth?

Braces will work for adults just like they will for teens. You are never too old to straighten your teeth.

We offer traditional braces for all of our patients who are interested in them. Braces have been helping people transform their smiles for decades. They will work on practically any alignment problem you might have.

The brackets and wires work together to push and pull your teeth where they should be to give you a smile that is visually attractive and easier to keep clean.

We also have learned that many adults are not interested in wearing metal braces on their teeth during their treatment. We have other options that can produce similar results while being less discreet in social and professional situations.

One option is to get ceramic braces instead. These still use brackets and wires, but the brackets are clear, so they are much less noticeable than the metal kind.

Even so, you still need to avoid eating certain foods during your treatment.

For something even more discreet, we may recommend ClearCorrect as an alternative to traditional braces. With ClearCorrect, you will receive a series of custom-designed plastic aligners. Each aligner will gently push your teeth a little closer to your final straight smile.

Since the aligners are clear, they seem to disappear when placed over your teeth. Most people won’t know you are wearing them unless you tell them or you remove your aligners in front of someone else.

With ClearCorrect, you should take out your aligners for meals and to brush and floss your teeth. This means you can continue eating what you want throughout your treatment. (Just remember to brush before you put your aligner back in.)

Start with a Consultation

The best treatment for you will depend on what you are willing to wear as well as the severity of your alignment issues. ClearCorrect is a great option for many patients, but unfortunately, it won’t work for everyone.

Our doctors can examine your mouth during your consultation and advise you on which treatment or treatments could work for you. They also will be happy to answer any questions you have, so you can decide what your next step will be.
