Enjoy The Holiday Season By Treating Your TMJ
The “most wonderful time of the year” also can seem like the most stressful time of the year. You want to make time for family and friends, check off everyone on your gift list, decorate the house …
All of this can lead to TMJ problems.
Stress can lead to the kind of teeth grinding that causes TMJ issues, including TMJ disorders, too. Don’t let jaw pain ruin your holiday celebrations. Visit our dentists in Rochester Hills, MI, to learn how we could help you.
Letting this problem go untreated will only make it worse.
A Day With A TMJ Disorder
You wake up with another headache. You are getting tired of taking a pain reliever before your morning shower, but you feel like you need it just to get through the day.
You don’t have to go to work, but your day is pretty packed. You start making coffee as you review your plans. You are shopping for presents in the morning, helping decorate the tree in the afternoon, then going to your spouse’s cousin’s house for an early gift exchange.
You feel your headache starting to return as you try to figure out how you will get to all the places you need to go. You sip your coffee, and take a bite of a toasted bagel … and boy does it hurt!
You did not expect eating a bagel to cause that much pain. You keep drinking your coffee, but you decide eating the rest of the bagel isn’t worth the pain.
After fighting traffic to get your favorite shopping center, you feel a little overwhelmed by the crowd. By lunchtime, you are feeling a bit frazzled, and your jaw is starting to hurt again. You decide to stick with a smoothie instead of attempting to eat something more solid.
Back at home, you learn your children have made Christmas cookies (with help from your spouse), and they want you to try the first one. They are hard and crunchy. You wince as you take a bite and try your best to hide the pain as you chew it. You love that your kids did this. You just wish you didn’t have to eat the cookies right now.
As you are getting ready for the gift exchange, your spouse reminds you that his uncle (the loud one who always wants to argue politics) is going to be there. Again, the jaw pain and the headaches start to come back.
You guess you’ll take a few more pain relievers … and you’ll bring the bottle with you just in case.
If you are having days like this more often than you would like, it’s time to call Hubbard & Leath Dental.
Spot The TMJ Symptoms
TMJ disorders are somewhat complicated. They can have a variety of causes as well as a variety of symptoms.
Here are some symptoms you should watch for:
☐ Lingering jaw pain
☐ Pain during or after meals
☐ Facial pain
☐ Frequent headaches and earaches
☐ Jaw tenderness
☐ Neck and upper back pain
☐ Trouble opening and closing your jaw
If you are dealing with one or more of these issues regularly, you may have a TMJ issue. It may be something else, but our dentists can examine your teeth and jaw to help you figure out what is happening.
Get TMJ Treatment
Teeth grinding and clenching are among the common causes of TMJ disorders. Many people do these things without realizing it. This includes millions of Americans who grind their teeth in their sleep.
That clenching and grinding can wear down the enamel on your teeth, and it can put more than double the normal pressure on your jaw and its surrounding tissues.
Our staff may be able to show you some muscle relaxation exercises to alleviate the stress on the tissues around your jaw.
If that doesn’t help, the next step is making an oral appliance for you to wear while you sleep. This is a special mouthguard that keeps your top and bottom teeth separated. It also can provide relief by holding your jaw in a relaxed position.
With time, most patients notice their TMJ symptoms become less common.
