We Make Dental Care Easier For Anxious Patients
We can’t tell you how many patients tell us that they have dental anxiety or that they are afraid of the dentist when they first visit our office.
We can tell you that we continue to see many of those same patients every week at Hubbard & Leath Dental. We believe our emphasis on patient care helps anxious patients feel comfortable.
And that makes it easier for them to receive the oral care that they need.
Are you afraid of the dentist? Does a member of your family become anxious when you mention getting a dental cleaning and exam?
It’s OK if you feel that way. It’s more common than you may realize.
But it’s just as important to know that the dentists and staff at our Rochester Hills, MI, office are here to help you. With some time and patience, you may even get to where you look forward to visiting us.

Know What To Expect
One of the most common reasons people are afraid is that they don’t know what will is going to happen.
There are times when this can be kind of fun, like when you are watching a scary movie or when you are going on a ride at an amusement park.
When someone is going to stick tools in your mouth, that may be a different story. We understand that.
It’s also why we will be happy to answer any questions you may have before, during, or after your procedure. When you know why we are doing something, it often makes it easier for you to handle it, too.
Things Have Changed
Another common reason people are fearful of dental care is because of bad experiences they had when they were younger. Some of the old ways of doing things may not have been particularly pleasant.
That’s why we want to stress that we are modern dental practices. We have incorporated new technology and new techniques into our daily routines that make dental care easier for everyone involved — especially our patients.
Get Cozy In One Of Our Dentist Chairs
Imagine lying back with a set of headphones over your ears. You close your eyes and focus on listening to some of your favorite songs.
Or maybe you keep your eyes open so you can watch one of your favorite shows on one of our flat-screen televisions. (We have one in each of our rooms.)
And when you are finished, we’ll even offer you a warm towel.
That may not seem like a description of a dentist office, but it is what your visit can be like at Hubbard & Leath Dental.
You Also Can Try Dental Sedation
You may not realize it, but sedation dentistry has been around for more than 150 years. In our practice, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation for our patients.
Either will work. It’s just a matter of figuring out which option is right for you. Good candidates for dental sedation include:
➤ People who are afraid of pain
➤ People who are afraid of needles
➤ People who are afraid of specific dental tools
➤ People who may not want to remember their dental visit
➤ People who gag easily
All of those concerns can feed into someone’s dental anxiety. And sedation dentistry can help you let you feel relaxed in spite of those anxious feelings.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is inhaled through a mask that fits over your nose. All you have to do is breathe normally, and in a matter of minutes, you will feel calmer. You also won’t feel any pain during your treatment, whether it’s a routine cleaning or something else.
You also may want to know that this wears off quickly in most cases as well when we are finished.
Oral sedation is a bit stronger. We may recommend this if you have more severe dental anxiety. This is a simple as taking a pill … and finding someone else to drive you to and from our office.
You may feel the effects of oral sedation for a few hours, so you should plan to rest when your family member or friend brings you home from your appointment.
