Below we’ve mentioned a few reasons you may want to make an appointment soon!
Decay & Declining Grades
One in every seven kids between 6 and 12 years old has had a toothache in the past six months, according to the Children’s Dental Health Project . The National Institutes of Health also noted that more than half of all kids will have a cavity by the time they turn 11, and 7 in 10 kids will have a cavity by their 19th birthday.
This is a concern from an oral health standpoint, but it also may have some effect on how your kids do in school. The Children’s Dental Health Project also reported on a survey that kids were four times more likely to have low grades if they reported having tooth pain.
Pain could certainly be a distraction for kids trying to pay attention in class. At the same time, dental problems also cause US kids to miss more than 51 million hours of instruction every year.
You would agree that your kids have a better chance of doing well in school when they aren’t distracted and when they are in attendance. A dental cleaning and exam today could prevent bigger concerns and save you the cost of treating those problems down the road.
Stay in the Game
If your kids play sports, then you make an effort to support them from the stands or the sidelines whenever you can. You probably worry about injuries, too. So, you also insist that they wear the right equipment when they take the court or the field.
That should include an athletic mouthguard. Young athletes who don’t wear mouthguards are 60 times more likely to have dental injuries that athletes who do.
Just like a seatbelt, a mouthguard won’t stop an accident from happening. However, it can minimize the effect of a fall, an accidental elbow to the jaw, or a hit in the mouth with a ball.
If you have questions about what kind of mouthguard to get for your daughter or son, just ask. It’s better for you and your child to take steps now that could help you avoid a dental emergency later.
Speaking of prevention, there are a few more things we can do as part of our family dentistry to help you and your kids.
Dental sealants and fluoride treatments offer extra protection against tooth decay. Sealants are a coating for teeth that acts as a physical barrier against cavity-causing bacteria. Fluoride is a mineral that helps to make teeth stronger, which helps them become more resistant to decay.
Together or separately, they are great ways to protect your kids’ oral health.
