Examples Of Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies really can happen anytime and anywhere.
You could be going to a movie with your friends, on a date, or as a night out with your family. Instead of enjoying the trailers, you may bite into an unpopped kernel that causes a broken or cracked tooth.
At that point, you may become much less interested in the movie.
You could be playing catch with your children in the backyard. Taking your eye off the ball for just a moment could leave you with a swollen lip and a tooth that has been knocked out of place.
Accidents are not the only reason people have dental emergencies, however.
Tooth decay that goes unnoticed can lead to an infected tooth. Gum disease can lead to problems as well, including pain or tooth loss at the latter stages of this condition.
Any of these are a good reason to call Hubbard & Leath Dental as soon as you notice something.
Even so, there are things you can do to help prevent some of these problems.
Preventive Care For You And Your Family
There are good reasons the American Dental Associations recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the dentist a couple times per year.
Every day, bacteria tries to build plaque, a sticky film on your teeth. Plaque buildup increases your risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing your teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste is a great way to break up the plaque and remove it from your teeth.
Flossing is still important (no matter what you may have read in the news last fall). Flossing cleans the spaces between your teeth that your toothbrush can’t reach. By using dental floss or another interdental cleaner daily, you can remove plaque as well as small food particles from those spaces.
If plaque is not removed, it can harden into what we call tartar. Tartar is more difficult to remove, and brushing and flossing may not be enough to get rid of it. That’s also why you should visit our dentist office in Rochester Hills, MI, a couple times each year for a professional dental cleaning. A member of our team will remove any plaque or tartar you may have missed.
Plus, we are always looking for signs of cavities and gum disease. We hope you don’t have either, but if you do, we want to help you get treatment as soon as possible to prevent tooth infections and advanced gum disease.
Extra Steps You Can Take
It’s not possible to prevent every dental emergency, but you can take steps to reduce your risk.
In addition to your daily hygiene routine and regular professional cleanings, you should ask about:
◆ Fluoride treatments — Fluoride is a mineral. When it is applied to your teeth, it can repair minor damage to your enamel (the outer layer of your teeth), and it can make your enamel stronger.
◆ Dental sealants — If you were trying to keep a pest out of a garden, you might build a barrier to keep it away. Dental sealants can help keep bacteria from the most vulnerable parts of your teeth.
◆ Athletic mouthguards — You don’t have to be a professional to protect your teeth. Anyone — children, teenagers, and adults — should wear athletic mouthguards during any high impact sports.
