Whiten Your Smile, Brighten Your Day
Which of the following would your worry about spilling on a white tablecloth?
_ Soft drinks
_ Tomato sauce
✔︎All of the Above
Which of those things can stain your white teeth? (Hint: It’s the same answer as the previous question.)
If you did spill something on the tablecloth, you would wash it to bring back its bright, white color.
Teeth whitening at Hubbard & Leath Dental can do the same thing for your smile. We use Zoom! professional whitening for our patients who want their teeth to truly be their “pearly whites” once again.
How Our Teeth Become Stained
We use our teeth throughout our lives. The decisions we make about what we eat and how we care for our teeth affect how they look. That shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
What you may not know is how your teeth become stained.
There are two basic ways that stains can change the color of your teeth.
The first are extrinsic stains. These are the stain on the outside of your teeth.
Your teeth are covered with enamel, which is the hardest substance on the human body. Healthy enamel protects your teeth from infections that could cause tooth decay.
This doesn’t stop the enamel from getting stained, however.
Wine and tea have tannins, which can stain your teeth. Colorful foods, like tomato sauce, can leave behind evidence of where they have been.
And then there are tobacco product, which contain nicotine and tar. Both of these can stain your teeth (among the other problems tobacco use can cause).
The second kind of stains are intrinsic, or stains on the inside of your teeth. This can occur if your teeth have been d amaged. Tooth discoloration is a side effect of some medicines, too.
How Teeth Whitening Can Help
Teeth whitening products can help to remove extrinsic stains. In general, these stains develop gradually, over long periods of time. Often we don’t notice these changes until long after they started.
Commercial and professional teeth whitening products often have similar active ingredients to remove your stains.
The difference is that professional products have a much higher concentration of those active ingredients. This is why professional products work faster and provide more noticeable results.
At our dentist office in Rochester Hills, we use Zoom! whitening for our patients. We have both in-office and take-home products, depending on your preference.
The in-office whitening is the fastest way to remove the stains from your teeth. During your visit, we will apply the Zoom! to your teeth. Then we expose your teeth to an ultraviolet light. This activates the whitening process.
By the time you are finished, you will be able to see a brighter, whiter smile in the mirror.
The take-home product can be used with our in-office treatment or on its own. The take-home product does not work as quickly as the in-office product, but it will whiten your smile enough that you can see a difference.
The fastest-acting commercial products can improve the appearance of your teeth to a lesser degree. The bottom line is this: you can get much better results in the same amount of time or less with Zoom!
Why You May Want to Whiten Your Teeth
If you are debating whether you should whiten your teeth, here are a few reasons why you may want to do it:
► Your smile will look better.
Your smile will be brighter and look cleaner, which makes it more appealing. It’s like having a white shirt. It looks better when it is as bright as it can be.
► You will look younger.
We will use the white shirt as a comparison again. The more often you wear it, the less likely it is to retain its original color. Likewise, our teeth lose some of their whiteness naturally with age.
We can bring back the color of our shirt with bleach, and we can revive your smile with teeth whitening.
► You will feel more confident.
When you have a clean, white smile, you are more likely to show it.
► You have a big event coming up.
Wedding season will be here in less than six months. If you are a bride- or groom-to-be or a member of the wedding party, you know lots of photos will be taken on the big day. You want to look your best in the pictures, and that should include your smile.
