You Can Stay Calm, Relaxed At The Dentist
They are standing over you, staring intently as if they are looking for something. You feel helpless. You feel like you want to say something but can’t.
So, you just stay away from the dentist completely. After all, you still brushing your teeth daily. You try to floss daily too … well, most days.
Your teeth are healthy. You aren’t experiencing any pain, and you don’t see any cavities, so your mouth must be OK, right? Right?
Before you go any further, please take a deep breath. We know that millions of people are afraid of the dentist, and it’s OK if you are one of them.
In spite of this, we treat patients every day at Hubbard & Leath Dental in Rochester Hills, MI, who suffer from dental anxiety. How is this possible?
Well, many patients appreciate the personal care we provide, including a number of comfort options. Other patients take advantage of sedation dentistry to receive the care they need to maintain their oral health.
Here To Help
General and family dentistry is about taking care of teeth and gums, but it’s more than that. At it’s core, dentistry is about helping people, including patients who may feel anxious about coming to our office.
Some people get the same feelings when they go to the dentist that they used to get when they were called to the principal’s office during their school days.
We don’t want you to feel that way. We are not here to judge you or lecture you. We do want you to keep your mouth as healthy as possible, and we want to support your efforts to do that.
We know it’s a cliché, but we really do try to treat each of our patients like our own family. We want to know you, and we want to understand how we can make your visits to our office more pleasant.
Here To Listen
As part of our effort to assist our patients, we want you to feel as comfortable as you can be in our office.
If there is something we can do to make appointment easier to handle, please let us know over the phone or in person. Through our experience, we have learned some things that help many of our patients receive the routine preventive care that they need.
One example of this is the televisions we have in each of our patient care rooms. You may prefer a distraction from the work we need to do to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth. Watching one of your favorite shows may be the perfect solution for you.
Or maybe you are bothered by the sounds of dental care. You may be fine if you could just block the sound of the instruments being moved around. You can do this by listening to music during your cleaning. You can bring your own device, or you can borrow our headphones to listen to your favorite band instead.
When you are finished, we will even provide you with a warm towel. There’s just something about that feeling, plus you can use it to clean up if you feel you should.
Once again, please let us know if there is something else we can do to help you relax or feel more comfortable.
Here For You
At this point, we suspect some of your are still skeptical. You may not believe that watching a TV show or closing your eyes and focusing on a song will help you.
We get it. Dental anxiety is a real and personal experience.
Our staff is also sensitive to patients who are anxious or nervous about being in our office. Another way we may be able to help is through sedation dentistry.
We offer different kinds of dental sedation for our patients.
• Nitrous oxide is the mildest form of sedation. You just breathe in, start to feel relaxed, and you are able to remain cool, calm, and collected until your treatment is finished.
• For patients who need something a little stronger, we offer IV sedation. With this option, you may not remember anything about your treatment, although you will receive all the benefits.
• For patients undergoing complex procedures, we may use general anesthesia. Again, you won’t remember anything about the procedure, but you will complete the treatment that you need.
